So, it's been a long time since I've done anything on this blog. I have been doing a far bit of hobby work lately, so I am looking at reviving this corpse of a blog. I think a fitting start is addressing the relationship between 40K and myself.

Other distractions in life have meant that I've spent very little time in the past year building models, painting, or evening playing games of 40K. So far this year I've got a fair bit into painting and decided I need to get my head back into the game. Having started to brush up again on rules, and getting a game in, I've come to realize that there are aspects of this game now which I consider to be broken, and which removes much of the fun of the game for me.

At the end of the day the point in the hobby is to have fun, so if I'm not having fun then something is very wrong. This leaves me with a choice of 2 options. First, I could call it day and say that the game is no longer fun and retire from playing 40K. Second, I could figure out everything that I dislike about the game, and re-rule them to something more sensible and only play against people willing to accept the rulings.

The first option presents the problem that I don't really want to write off the hobby due to what has already been invested in it. The second option presents the problem that finding players that will be happy with the way I've ruled my games. Having said that, if an opponent is not interested in letting me have fun in my hobby then they're probably not worth playing against anyway. So it appears the second option is the way forward for me, the only thing left is to figure out where the problems are and define some sensible solutions.

Unfortunately one of the first decisions being made here is dismissing the Eldar codex as a possible opponent. I feel that the book is poorly written, and breaks too many core rules for non Eldar players to have fun against. So until a more sensibly written Eldar codex emerges, I'm afraid our Eldar players will not be facing me on the tabletop.

The second big rule to address is destroyer weapons. This is a rule I feel really doesn't belong in games of vanilla 40K in it's current state. The 6th edition rule set had a semi elegant solution to using D weapons in vanilla 40K, which was to make all D weapons count as strength 10 instead. I think this is far more balanced than the current rule, so going forward I think I may be employing this rule.

Going on from there, I will be compiling a brief rule document which I will present to a potential opponent. After having a read through, they can then decide whether they feel it's fair and are willing to play. If they don't agree, well then I'll just play against else who actually wants to have a fun game.

I realize that this may lead to me being labelled an elitist player, but if it leads to more fun games for me and my opponents, then I shall wear that badge proudly.Sinisterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08058765865728078812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7900646466267143591.post-78012106894586700812013-09-04T18:07:00.000+02:002013-09-04T18:07:54.517+02:00Measuring Template

Just a quick shout out once again to the folks at The 11th Company. A few weeks back I received a measuring template which is quite cool.

It has 6", 4" 2" and 1" measuring edges for all common distances. There is also inch markings along the 6" edge in case you need to measure outside of the common ranges. It even has a hole so you can swing it around on your finger while annoyingly waiting while your opponent slow plays you!

So send them some money at http://www.tangtwo.com/11thcompany/, and they will send you one of these cool templates. If you don't send them money, baby seals will die...

PS. Yes this is a shameless plug, but it's my blog, and these guys are cool, so there.Sinisterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08058765865728078812noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7900646466267143591.post-3174864102931744372013-09-03T09:46:00.000+02:002013-09-03T09:46:25.954+02:00Reinforcements have arrived

Okay, so my blogging activity has been rather dead for a quite a while now, and now it's time to pick it up again. While I've done a fair bit of putting paint on models, unfortunately nothing has been done to completion. One of my problems has been scurrying to get some sort of force painted to minimum 3 colours so I can actually play with a painted army. This has caused a lot of back and forth due to indecision on my part of what I actually want to paint.

This is now no longer a problem. I have made a purchase from another player who has decided to step away from 40K. Yesterday I received said package, and behold:

The acquisition of this force will allow me to get games in with a fully painted army, while allowing me to get units fully painted without feeling rushed. I already feel more relaxed about my painting, and have already started mapping out what I will be focusing on next.

This means I should hopefully have more significant content to add to this blog, which should mean more frequent updates. Now I'm not going to get ahead of myself, I'm setting a minimum target of 1 post a month, with an effort being made to do a post every 2 weeks. We'll see how this goes.

Sinisterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08058765865728078812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7900646466267143591.post-75283425004162544042013-03-15T09:02:00.000+02:002013-03-15T09:02:15.328+02:00Infestation Log - Part 2

Due too delays (not entirely unexpected), I have fallen short of my rather ambitious target to get a small group of orks painted to a basic state. I am still slowly trudging along and have managed to get some paint onto the models, so I thought I'd put up a small update.

These are the next seven boyz to come off the painting table. The 3 character models that I posted last time are about halfway there, so hopefully I can post them up soon.

The next six boyz with their Nob have been undercoated, and are ready to for some colour.

Side note: You may notice that I've got the models propped on small stands. These are to give me something to grab onto while painting. The observant among you may notice that some are standing on plastic Coca Cola bottle lids. I find these are the perfect size for the 25mm bases. I've also scrounged some lids off milk cartons, which are a perfect size for the 40mm bases.

A quick update on the progress of my Ork infestation. After a few delays, I've managed to get the basic colours on 5 of da boyz. I got distracted and started messing with the skin colour, but managed to stop myself after putting a wash on the first one.

While these Boyz are finished to standard of the current goal, they are not complete by any stretch. At a later stage I'll revisit all the models in this project to add shading, highlighting, and clan markings.

This is the next batch of Boyz, undercoated and ready for some colour.

This is my slightly converted Warboss (with his pet squig, Skrat), also ready for some colour.

Here is my converted Kustom Force Field Big Mek.

And lastly, my Painboy. No conversions here.

As a side note, I take a slightly different approach when undercoating character models. I prime the models grey, then put a black wash over the entire model. This picks out all the details quite nicely so I can paint the details more carefully.

It's been a month or so since I last did any serious work on my models, so last night I sat down to figure out which of my models to tend to next. The immediate goal is to get a small force painted to a minimum standard to play with, while I slowly work on fully painting other models. As mentioned previously, I have a range of armies that need attention, deciding which to attend to next was a bit a bother.

I currently have a bunch of Blood Angels on my painting table, but I want to get these guys fully painted before fielding them. After a bit of back and forth, I finally settled on my Orks (which I have recently reacquired). Even though the model count is higher than any of my Space Marine armies, getting the Orks together and painted (with a basic 3 colour minimum) is likely to be the easiest way to accomplish my goal.

The army will be 750 points of foot Orks, 47 models consisting of Shoota Boyz, Slugga 'Ard Boyz, and Nobz.

My goal is to get this done in the next 2 and a half weeks, which is a bit tight for me, but I'll be trying my best to get it done. I'll hopefully be posting up my progress every few days to try keep myself motivated on this.Sinisterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08058765865728078812noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7900646466267143591.post-5788821387375727692012-12-19T12:27:00.000+02:002013-09-03T10:30:33.378+02:00The 11th Company Podcast

This is a short plug for The 11th Company podcast, their website can be found at http://www.tangtwo.com/11thcompany/. The podcast is also available via iTunes, and episodes are released weekly. The show has a bunch content squeezed in, with the length of each episode ranging from 2 to 4 hours.

Anybody that doesn't already listen to The 11th Company podcast should really head over to their website and grab it. The podcast is focused on Warhammer 40K and covers a range of topics from army lists and tactics, to terrain and tournaments. The guys are most entertaining to listen to, and I find myself eagerly awaiting the next episode to become available each week.
I recently received some swag in the mail from them, delivered all the way to South Africa. If you want in on some of this, then send them a donation (make sure to donate on their main page, and not on their forum). These guys put together a quality show that really deserves the support.Sinisterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08058765865728078812noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7900646466267143591.post-48065599184426273152012-12-13T10:32:00.000+02:002012-12-13T10:32:27.179+02:00Denizens of The Pit

Over the past couple of years I have been playing primarily with Space Marine based armies, using different codexes and getting a feel for how they work. Over this time I have amassed a fair number of models, almost all of which are still unpainted. What I've found is that I like how each of them play to their own specialties. As such, I've decided that instead of painting one generic catchall army, I want to actually paint up a bunch of different chapters.

This has a few benefits. First, it gives me an opportunity to paint a number of different colors so I don't get bored of painting the same thing continuously. Second, with the new allies rules, it will make my armies clearer on the battlefield (which obviously translates into a more fluid gaming experience). Third, this gives me an opportunity to create armies that are more themed to their specialties (again, I can tie the units together using the new allies rules).

The first of my armies is Dark Angels. I like terminators, I like
bikes, and I like land speeders, so Dark Angels makes sense. I primarily
run a Dual-wing list, but once we get a new codex I may bring in some
power armor and create some more long range fire options.

My second army is Salamanders. I've picked up
the first of the Salamanders novels, but I'm still trying to find time
to sit down and read it. From what I've found so far, I really like the
background on these guys. This makes up my more mechanized force, as
Salamanders tend to have better tech.

My third army is Blood Angels. While I'm not overly excited about the Blood Angel fluff, I really wanted one of my armies to be red. They also tend to have more of a fast assault feel to them, so this fits together nicely for my assault force.

Army number four is Chaos Marines. I had been bouncing the idea of a Fallen army for a while, but I held off committing to it until the new Chaos Marine book landed. Once I saw the new book, I knew I had to dive into this. This is a homebrew Fallen army with a Slaanesh theme, and it forms my gun line army.

My fifth army I had reluctantly parted with in order to help a friend get into 40K. Due to unforeseen issues in life on their part, this army is finding it's way back to me. What army is this? Orks. ORKS. WAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!!! I love Orks. I love the silliness that is Orks. I don't think I'll be parting with these guys again once they return.

So there we have it. A breakdown of all my armies, and a hint of all the work that lies ahead. This post serves as an introduction to, what will be, a series of painting logs.Sinisterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08058765865728078812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7900646466267143591.post-19489947217588137512012-11-19T16:08:00.000+02:002012-11-20T13:14:15.097+02:00Custom Built Autocannons

In the name of more dakka, I've decided to put together some kit-bashed autocannons for my Chaos Havocs. My reasons for building these my self is 2-fold. First, the Havoc box only has one autocannon, and I'm looking for 8 of these puppies. Second, the autocannon in the Havoc box is technically actually a reaper autocannon, not a standard autocannon (some fluff justification to make myself feel better about it). Since I've got a bucket load of spare terminator assault cannons, I figured this would be a good place to start.

With the terminator arm as a start, I chopped off the assault cannon barrel and the terminator arm, and carved out a space for a regular space marine arm.

I then took a regular bolter space marine arm, and chopped of the hand, preferably close to the hand to give more plastic to work with when trying to align the arm to the gun.

For the autocannon barrel I got some styrene tubing, cut to taste. My goal here was to try mimic the Predator autocannon barrel to a certain extent.

Here are all the bits together to form the autocannon:

Of course, before mounting the barrel we need to drill a hole in the gun to secure the styrene barrel.

And the final product, add detailing to taste. I still need to cut some vent slits into the end on the barrel, but I'm still deciding if I'm happy with the length of the barrel.

And there we have it, custom built autocannons!Sinisterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08058765865728078812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7900646466267143591.post-13840031792787024722012-11-09T10:58:00.000+02:002012-11-09T10:58:35.386+02:00Introduction

Hello World!

So at long last I delve into the world of blogging. I've created this blog with the intention of keeping track of the numerous projects on the go in my miniature war gaming hobby. This will primarily focus on game systems from Games Workshop, but may extend further if I feel so inclined.

I'm hoping to put together detailed write-ups of how I convert and paint my models. I'm certainly not the greatest painter, so this would mostly be for my own reference, but perhaps somebody else will stumble across these and find them useful.Sinisterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08058765865728078812noreply@blogger.com0
